Harvey Ball, a commercial artist, created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of happiness on the planet. As the years passed, he became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day.
His hope was that everyone would devote one day each year to genuine smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no race, no sexual orientation and no religion. What if we presented ourselves to the world in the same way?
A genuine smile for me embodies the same meaning as the word namaste. "I see you and bow to you. Free from the bonds of ego, I acknowledge our eternal connectedness." When you truly greet someone with a smile, there is only opportunity for present moment living. The past & future are quiet and a moment of kindness and understanding is exchanged.
Let's celebrate today and infuse the essence of World Smile Day into the next 364 days of the year. Do one kind thing today and make someone smile.
