My mom just came for a 2-week visit. An extra set a hands with a 1 1/2 year old is never a bad thing. I loved just sitting back and watching McKenna connect with "nana." There is so much that I want her to learn from my mother; good ol' midwest cooking (mashed potatoes with a cup of butter anyone?), sweet commitment (my dad & her have been married for 40+ years) and how to deeply care for family.
The lesson that I learned from my mother during this visit was unconditional love. I took her out to breakfast, ready to barrage her with deep questions. "How can I be a better daughter to you? A better mother? Wife? What do you see that I need to improve?" I waited, a little nervous to hear her response. And then it came, "nothing." "No matter what you do & where you go, I will love you no matter what." Huh? How can that be? I have moments during the day when I don't think I am doing anything right.
Unconditional love means doesn't mean you are without flaws. It means that you love in spite of the flaws, in spite of the growth that needs to happen. You see the light in someone and when they see the dark, you shine even more light and love to them.
Most of us are way too hard on ourselves. Maybe today, you can cut yourself a bit of slack. Slow down, surround yourself with the people who believe in you and thank them for accepting you just as you are.
