Gates

I traveled to Spain this month to celebrate my 50th birthday—a milestone that felt like both a pause and a beginning.
My birthday wish was simple: to walk for endless hours in nature, free from the pull of time or responsibility, alongside my best friend.
The Camino del Santiago has been on my vision list for years. Time on trail became the center point of planning. Although I aspire to walk the full 500 miles someday, this trip offered just a few precious days—and they were enough.
The beauty of coastal northern Spain exceeded every expectation. The rolling green hills, salty breeze, and rhythm of walking mile after mile allowed space for uninterrupted thought and deep connection. It was a gift to move slowly, to listen, and to be fully present.
Along the trail, we encountered simple gates dividing one pasture from another.
Each could have been a mere pause in our stride—open, pass through, close. But instead, they became invitations.
As we opened the gate, we asked: “What am I opening my mind and heart to?”
And as we closed it behind us, we reflected: “What am I ready to close the gate on?”
Each gate became an opportunity—a moment to release what no longer served us and to make space for what was waiting to enter. A small, quiet prayer offered to the trail, carried by the wind.
With each gate, my answers shifted, but a few themes emerged—gentle reminders of what I want more of in this next chapter of life, and what I’m ready to let go of.
What I’m opening the gate to:
Slow memory-making time with the kids
Time for more creative endeavors
Strengthening my connection to the divine
Balanced and fulfilling friendships
Body love
What I’m closing the gate on:
Overscheduling myself
Questioning my gifts
Doubting my worthiness
As I reflect on those days on the trail, I realize how often life offers us invisible gates—moments to pause, choose again, and realign with what matters most. The Camino gave me a glimpse of what it means to walk lightly: to carry only what is essential, to open with intention, and to close with peace. What are you opening or closing the gate to this season?
